World
, ancient - the famous
cartographic treasure
"Geographia Sacra" by Ortelius. This truly rare map was
printed on two joined pieces of paper and time has taken its toll of
this -expert repairs do not completely hide some loss where the
join became separated. Ask for the set of scans - one is above but
there are 2 others. Only
200 were printed and 140 exist in complete atlases so there can be no
more than 60 possible owners of this princely rarity if all survived! |

Atlantis.
Astonishing and very rare map by Colonel Bory St. Vincent from his
work "Essais sur les Iles Fortunees" this being "Carte
Conjecturale de L'Atlantide". Hardly needs translation but it is
a theoretical map of the lost continent of Atlantis based around peaks
and ranges of the Azores, Madeira, Canaries [The Fortunate Isles] and
the Cape Verde Islands. Elegantly drawn and with the original hand
colouring. Longitude Zero is, of course, on Paris. |

World. Very rare example of a world map
on Sir J. Herschel's Projection from The Popular Atlas. This conical
projection shows more accurately the relative sizes of continents and
distances. Also, unlike other maps of the period a real effort is made
to map the coast of the Antarctic continent. Sea distances are marked as
also the prevailing ocean currents making this as much a work of
scholarship as it is an attractive map. |
