RAVISHING!

We have the opportunity to offer some extremely rare engravings of Turner's pictures. The first set are from the Turner Gallery of 1876 and are folio size hand coloured engravings of a very high quality.

The second set were engraved during Turner's life-time by Thomas Lupton. the intention was to produce a portfolio of mezzotints as a co-operative venture called "Turner's Ports of England". Perhaps 15 water-colours were painted for this purpose. After Lupton had made 13 plates [4 unfinished], they had a quarrel over money. After Turner's death in 1851 John Ruskin persuaded Lupton to finish the 4 and so 12 plates were issued as a loose portfolio entitled "Turner's Harbours of England" [one plate had been used in another publication]. The 12 were published by on 7th May 1856 by E. Gambart & Co. These should not be confused with the many copies engraved long after Turner's death as the work was done in his life time.

Below those we show some equally remarkable representations of Turner's work. In about 1857 John Ruskin, Turner's greatest admirer, commissioned the firm of Cundall, Downes to produce, by photographic means, the whole of Turner's famous Liber Studiorum - his obsession in his middle and later years. In 1861 the first 12 were exhibited in Edinburgh and the whole stock sold out. Cundall, Downes made a further 18 and offered a portfolio of 30 for the 1864 Alexandra Palace Exhibition. Those again sold out but the process was so expensive and technically difficult that no further prints were made. The portfolio represented below consists of sepia toned albumen prints [very early photographs] tipped onto heavy white cartridge stock. They are items of extreme rarity and truly illustrate Turner's mastery of light and shade.

Items offered mounted [matted] are in pale ivory mounts with backings, ready to frame. Only conservation quality materials are used in our mounts.

These rare prints and photographs are genuine and original. They are of the date stated and are not modern reproductions of any sort.

These Turner albumen photos are all laid down on stiff white cartridge of 1861 vintage. the backing sheets have slight foxing marks - the prints are free of any defect except for a slightly lighter border - perhaps a reaction with the glued edge.

The backing sheets bear the publisher's imprint and are dated June 15th 1861. Titles were applied to each sheet by glued-on labels at bottom left. Each sheet is 450x315mm - over 18"x12". Photo sizes are stated individually.
