Although the Americas were amongst the last of the continents to be mapped the amount of attention devoted to the cartography of this area now exceeds all others. In comparatively recent times huge areas, previously unexplored, have fallen under the scrutiny of map makers. In consequence the maps show us, virtually year by year, the new limits of exploration. Whilst cartography of most of Europe was simple routine and motivated by commonsense and that of Asia and Africa largely a pure pursuit of knowledge, the mapping of the Americas was driven by commercial considerations - right back to the Spanish conquistadors - and was therefore strongly financed.

United States - Civil War set of 3 maps from The Weekly Dispatch Atlas published between October and December 1862. Full sets of 3 are comparatively rare. These show the Seat of War in Virginia [2 maps] and Virginia and Maryland on another.  Limited amount of original colouring. The maps measure 330x420 mm each. This paper is notoriously fragile so margins have been rebound at the rear in conservation tape. Some corners clipped - outside the image area and one has a yellowish stain at left margin extending fractionally into the map area at one point. However, these are hardly ever found in very fine condition and when they do a set goes for about $700. Our sterling price converts to about a third of that. E. United States. A very large map - original centrefold - showing the Railroad layout in 1898. Noted - the south half of Florida is void of such - the Indian Territory is shown divided by tribes as are also various Indian Reservations and major topographical points. Fascinating study. A. & C.
